Supplemental Health and Medicare

Chances are you currently have some form of health insurance through your employer or business. However, it is important to consider the additional coverage you may need when you retire, because employment-based coverage may provide lower benefits or end altogether when your employment ends.

Medicare, the government-subsidized health insurance benefit for people over 65, may cover part of your costs for short-term medical problems but will not cover some significant health care expenses, including:

  1. Nursing care beyond a set number of days
  2. Some physicians’ bills
  3. Routine medical care

As you probably know, the Medicare system is undergoing major changes. It is difficult to predict what will be covered at the time of your retirement.

Supplemental health insurance subsidized by the government is called Medigap. Like Medicare, the Medigap program is undergoing major changes, so you’d be well-advised to obtain expert advice as you make choices about supplemental health insurance.
